The Amazing Grace of God

Tuesday, February 9, 2010

Every Tuesday morning I have the privilege to lead worship for our High School chapel service. This morning, as we were waiting for chapel to start, our sound man started playing a video clip of a chameleon being placed on different neon-colored sunglasses. It was amazing to watch him instantly change his color to match the color of the sunglasses he was standing on. I don't know if this was preplanned or if he just randomly picked that video clip, but it was a perfect segue into our first song, "Grace Like Rain."

The truth about grace is so simple, yet we tend to make it so complicated. All we have to do is stand upon the grace of God and that grace will change the "color" of our hearts. I think this is exactly what Isaiah 1:18 means when it says, "Though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool." Without God's grace we become colored by sin and the world. When God's grace is welcomed into our lives it changes us. All we have to do is stand on Christ. But unlike the chameleon who only changes on the surface, we are changed from the inside out. We are changed through and through. That's amazing!

The words to "Amazing Grace" illustrate the changing power of God's grace: I once was lost but now I'm found; was blind but now I see. It doesn't matter what you are now because grace has the power to change you. That's what is so amazing about the grace of God!

Neat "happening" at chapel. I wonder if it couldn't also be said that grace can look differently for each of us... for different people and different circumstances. Not that God isn't consistent in His grace, but that that He's not limited by ... well, anything. So, He can apply His grace to us and our situation however He sees fit.
