holiday buzz words
Giving thanks, gratitude and gratefulness – buzz words spoken during the yearly holiday sandwiched in between Halloween and Christmas. Still munching on leftover candy and gearing up for Black Friday, we frantically prepare ourselves to pause and give thanks for our many blessings, stuffing ourselves with delectable treats and baked goodies that conjure up memories of childhood holidays spent with relatives and friends from afar. We run to the airport to catch a last minute flight, or stand in line at the grocery store for an hour for the forgotten cranberry sauce, vowing once again that next year will be different. Giving thanks, gratitude and gratefulness – buzz words spoken to sooth frayed nerves and calm frantic minds.

We pause to give thanks for the many things we have, all the while contemplating what we can give as gifts this Christmas to people who already have so much in just 30 short days. Slowly, gradually, becoming numb in our gratitude knowing that soon it will all be over and things will slow down once again. Giving thanks, gratitude and gratefulness – buzz words spoken to dispel the stress from the impending hustle and bustle of the most wonderful time of the year.

Giving thanks, gratitude and gratefulness is not about being thankful for what we have. It’s about giving up everything so that we can have His life – losing my life so that I can find it. It is recognizing that I have nothing without Him, and that without Him there is nothing, and that there is nothing but Him. Whether I have much or little, or have nothing at all, I am content because I have Him. Giving thanks, gratitude and gratefulness – not buzz words, but truth of a life lived not tied to the things of this world, but to an eternity with Him.
