The Growing Storm in American Politics

the growing storm in american politicsWhy are the nations so angry? Why do they waste their time with futile plans? The kings of the earth prepare for battle; the rulers plot together against the LORD and against his anointed one. “Let us break their chains,” they cry, “and free ourselves from slavery to God.” Psalm 2:1-3 (NLT)

Christianity in America is under increased attack. There is a growing segment of the population whose sole agenda is to completely do away with anything that has to with God and the Bible. Even within the ranks of our national political leadership there is a growing consensus that Christianity is the number one threat to our nation. The words of the third verse of this Psalm, written several thousand years ago, ring eerily true for us today.

There is good news and bad news in all of this. The bad news is that it will get worse. Jesus warned us of this several times throughout the Gospels. I'm not crying, "The sky is falling! The sky is falling!" I'm simply stating fact. There is good news however. This Psalm reminds of two simple truths to keep things in perspective.

#1 - No matter who is president, God is King!

Regardless of who wins the presidential election in a couple of weeks, Christ still reigns over heaven and earth. Everything that happens plays right into his ultimate plan. He is not caught off guard nor surprised by the geopolitical climate around the world today. He certainly is not up in heaven wringing his hands in worry about what what will happen next. Whether the Democrats or the Republicans win the election, God will still be the same, and he will still be in control.

#2 - We have nothing to worry about when we put our trust in Him.

I like how the New Living Translation puts it in verse 12 - But what joy for all who take refuge in him! When the world around us is in chaos and upheaval, we will be filled with peace and security. If you don't put your trust in him you will find yourself full of worry and anxiety. That is your only hope if your trust is in government.

It all boils down to trust. Romans 9:33 tells us that the one who trusts in him will never be put to shame. That is reassuring news! I am reminded of the words of a song from several years ago that said, "When you can't see his hand, trust his heart." One final word here. Even though God has it all planned out you still need to get out and vote!
