being thankful for the right reason
I will thank the LORD because he is just; I will sing praise to the name of the LORD Most High. Psalm 7:17 The Message

When asked the question, "What are you most thankful for?" the response from most will focus on things they have or things that have been done for them. Don't get me wrong. We should be thankful for those things. But in our consumer culture where everything is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and can be obtained without having to leave the comfort of our homes, it is so easy to lose sight of what we should really be thankful for, even in our worship.

Notice in Psalm 7:17 what David doesn't give thanks for. He doesn't mention his dream job, his vast wealth and possessions. He doesn't mention his circle of friends and family or his health. He wants God to know that there is only one thing that really matters, which he will always have even if all that other stuff isn't there. That one thing is the fact that God is just. His gratitude does not lie in the things he has, or even the things God has done for him. It is simply based on the fact of who he is.

David is not saying we shouldn't be thankful for the many things God has done for us and the countless things he has given us. He mentions all throughout the Psalms that we are to never forget his righteous deeds. What David is saying is that we need to make sure the foundation of our thankfulness rests on one thing alone - who God is and not what he does. This is important because when circumstances change, or we lose our possessions, the fact of who God is always remains constant. In fact, the greatness of who he is increases in our eyes as he remains the same while everything else changes.

What are you most thankful for today? I am thankful for many things, but I want to develop a deeper sense of gratitude in the simple fact that God is just. Like David, let that be the song of your heart today, tomorrow, and every day following.
