Signs and Wonders: 4 Core Values for Today's Church - Part 1

Tuesday, August 13, 2013

They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. Everyone was filled with awe, and many wonders and miraculous signs were done by the apostles. (Acts 2:42-43 NIV)

core values signLet me start out by stating emphatically that I believe signs and wonders are intended for the Church today and were not just part of the early Church during the time of the Apostles. The book of Acts has a two-fold purpose. First, it gives us an historical record of how the Church was birthed. Second, it was written as a blueprint for what the Church should look like and how she should function. To believe that it is merely an historical record requires one to draw the conclusion that Christ had no intention of the Church existing past the generation of the Apostles. To draw such a conclusion would then bring the entire Bible into suspicion as to its authority and relevance to us today. Acts is historical in scope, but was written for the greater purpose of presenting God's plan and purpose for His Church down through the ages. Therefore, we must conclude that the signs and wonders recorded in its pages serve the same purpose and that it is God's intention that they be a natural part of the Church today.

According to the passage above from Acts 2, there are 4 Core Values that God intended for the Church to function out of: Devotion to God's Word, Fellowship, Breaking of Bread and Prayer. These 4 core values must be at the center of who we are and what we do. I believe this is what ensured the success of the early Church and is what will ensure her continued success until Christ's return.

I need to point out that signs and wonders are the evidence that these 4 core values are in operation in the Church. I believe that when the Church functions the way Christ intended for her to function, signs and wonders will come naturally. In other words, they are proof that the Church is healthy and biblical. It is safe to assume therefore, that the absence of signs and wonders is a sign that the Church is not healthy or functioning properly. It is important to understand that these 4 core values are not the result of the pursuit of signs and wonders. Signs and wonders are the result or fruit of the pursuit of these core values. The pursuit of signs and wonders merely for the sake of them alone only leads to dysfunction and abuse, hurt and broken people, and anything but health.

In the following days I will lay out the 4 Core Values from Acts 2:42-43 and practical ways the Church today can incorporate them into the essence of who she is.
