signs and wonders part 3
They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. Everyone was filled with awe, and many wonders and miraculous signs were done by the apostles. (Acts 2:42-43 NIV)

Core Value #1 - The Apostle's Teaching. The fact that this value is listed first is intentional. It is the foundation for all four values. I believe we are living in a time in the Church's history when our devotion to the Apostle's teaching is more critical than ever before. I have this growing burden in my spirit about how little so many in the Church today know about God's Word. So many are being led astray by what sounds good, or how good it makes them feel without realizing that it isn't God's Word at all. Much of what is being taught to the masses consists of messages like "This Is Your Day" or "How to Become a Better You" rather than "Repent and Be Baptized" or "Take Up Your Cross and Follow Me." Today's Christian knows more about the stats of each Dallas Cowboy player or the rebound and free-throw average of the San Antonio Spurs bench than they do the basic teachings of the Bible.

This was the main, identifiable characteristic of the early Church. They were deeply devoted to the Apostle's Teaching. They taught it regularly. It became their way of life. We used to be that way. Where did we lose our identity? When did the Bible stop becoming the most important element of our lives? I want to be like the people in this YouTube video.

What was the Apostle's teaching? It was what Jesus taught them. If you read the book of Acts you see a group of men who made it their life's mission to teach the world everything Jesus had told them. They taught his words and nothing else. They took nothing away and they didn't add anything to it either. They didn't tell the people things they wanted to hear. In fact, what they told them landed them in jail, or worse, cost them their lives. That is what the Church needs to get back to. She needs to return to the simple, unadulterated truth. People won't want to hear it sometimes and they might even leave the Church because of it. That's okay though. It's time the Church was more afraid of the Holy Spirit walking out of our services than anyone in our pews never coming back.

Could it be that the reason we don't see signs and wonders anymore is because of our lack of devotion to God's Word? I don't propose we become rude, arrogant or confrontational for the sake of the Gospel. What I am proposing is that we get back to the basics of who we are and start with this first core value. I believe God's Word is powerful and when it becomes a part of who we are and not just something we do, the power of His Word will start manifesting itself among us through signs, wonders and miracles.

What do you need to do today to become devoted to the Apostles' Teaching?
