The Secret to Great Leadership

Gregg Popovich is one of the most successful basketball coaches of our time. As the Head Coach of the San Antonio Spurs, he has five NBA championships, has been awarded NBA Coach of the Year four times, and has been the NBA All-Star Head Coach four times.

Coach Pop is not a great leader because he can outplay his best players. In fact, he most likely wouldn't last long in a game against his own third-string bench. The key to his great leadership is his ability to maximize the great talent in his team. You will find that some of the greatest leaders of our time really aren't very talented. They just know how to lead and mentor others that have the talent to accomplish what they themselves can't.

Here's the bottom line: Leading is not about you being great. It's about developing great people around you. If you want to become a great leader the key is to stop trying to be great and simply start to focus on making those around you great. That is great leadership.
